Die neue Version zeichnet sich durch ein wesentlich professionelleres Schriftbild aus. Das ist das Ergebnis einer “Kerning” genannten Technik, die zur Verbesserung der Darstellung von proportionalen Schriftarten dient und mit Version 2.2 nun standardmäßig aktiviert wird. Die Funktionalität des integrierten PDF-Konverters wurde abermals erweitert. Jetzt ist die optionale Erstellung von Lesezeichen und der wahlweise Export von Formularfeldern möglich. Auch in puncto Kompatibilität bringt die neue Version Verbesserungen. Während schon OpenOffice.org 2.1 problemlos unter Windows Vista funktionierte, nutzt Version 2.2 nun einige der neuen Vista-Funktionen, wie beispielsweise einen erweiterten Dateidialog, um sich an das Look and Feel des neuen Betriebssystems anzupassen.
