Die PrOOo-Box hat sich in der Vergangenheit als betriebssystemübergreifende Zusammenstellung der Installationsdateien für Windows, Linux (RPM) und Mac OS X (PowerPC) mit Dokumentation, Rechtschreibung, Vorlagen und zusätzlichen Inhalten etabliert. Erster Virus für OpenOffice.org
Im Internet ist der erste Makro Virus für OpenOffice.org sowie für StarOffice entdeckt worden. Damit wird klar, dass durch die immer stärker werdende Verbreitung der Office Suite, diese auch langsam ins Virsier der Virenschreiber rückt.
Nach Angaben des Sicherheitsunternehmens Kapersky, hat sich dieser Virus bislang nicht sehr verbreitet.
Das Makro ist als harmlos zu bezeichnen, da es “nur” ein Bild aus dem Internet nachlädt, was aber wiederum zeigt, dass der Anwender auch hier nicht unbedacht jedes Dokument einfach so öffnen darf.

Vorlagenwettbewerb mit Buchpreisen
Der Erfolg der freien Office-Suite OpenOffice.org ist spätestens seit Veröffentlichung der Version 2.0 im letzten Herbst ungebremst. Um auch in Zukunft ein reichhaltiges Angebot an Vorlagen für die neue Version anbieten zu können, ruft das deutschsprachige Projekt einen Vorlagenwettbewerb aus. Dieser stellt den Auftakt zu einer Serie weiterer geplanter Wettbewerbe dar.
OpenOffice.org lebt als Open-Source-Community vom Interesse und Engagement seiner Anwender und Projektmitglieder. Jeder Anwender von OpenOffice.org ist daher aufgerufen, eigene Vorlagen zu erstellen und diese einzusenden.
Entsprechend des Charakters des Projektes OpenOffice.org müssen die Teilnehmer am Wettbewerb ihre Vorlagen unter die GNU LGPL stellen.

Vergleich Openoffice.org mit Microsoft Office
Viele Besucher wollen wissen, worin sich OpenOffice und Microsoft Office unterscheiden und welches der Office-Pakete die Nase vorn hat. Ich habe beide Office-Suiten getestet und kam zu folgendem Ergebnis:
- OpenOffice ist von der Benutzeroberfläche her sehr stark an MS-Office angelehnt. Ein Umstieg sollte also keine allzu großen Schwierigkeiten machen. Am Anfang muss man jedoch gelegentlich die Hilfe bemühen, um bestimmte Funktionen zu finden - nicht immer heissen diese gleich.
- OpenOffice ist an manchen Stellen nicht ganz so ausgereift wie MS Office. Gerade bei Calc / Excel gibt es doch einige Unterschiede, z.B. im Bereich dynamischer Pivot-Tabellen geht - hier gibt es weniger Optionen.
- Die Stabilität bei Writer ist besser als die bei Word, gearde im Handling von Graphiken (Word stürzt bei längeren Dokumenten mit Grafiken gerne mal ab…) Auch die Formatierungen werden zuverlässiger implementiert.
- OpenOffice kann Word-Dokumente lesen, ab der nächsten Version soll das auch umgekehrt funktionieren
- Was fehlt ist eine Alternative zu Outlook, also eine Kontakt- und Terminverwaltung. Hier wird gerne auf das inzwischen ausgereifte Open-Source-Programm Thunderbird verwieden, dort lassen sich Terminkalender und Kontaktverwaltung mittels Erweiterungen nachrüsten und ausbauen.
- OpenOffice ist völlig kostenlos, das ist das schlagendste Argument!
Auch in der PC-Welt wurden die beiden Office-Pakete miteinander verglichen. Diesmal nicht aufgrund des Leistungsumfangs sondern im Hinblick auf die Ressourcenverwendung. Openoffice braucht wohl zumeist etwas länger für die selben Aufgaben, trotzdem kommt die Zeitschrift zu dem Fazit:
Unterm Strich hat Openoffice.org 2.0 angesichts des Funktionsumfangs und dem unschlagbaren Preis-Leistungsverhältnis natürlich weiterhin meilenweit die Nase vorne.
